He Who Receives You Receives Me

Author: Joseph

Date: June 7, 2020

A disciple of Yeshua may suffer many trials and difficulties, but what happens when instead of being rejected, they are received by those whom God has commissioned them to go to?

“He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me” (Matthew 10:40).

"...expect to have God truly affect their lives..."

God, working through the disciple, is also received. This allows God to commune and do His heart-changing work in the recipient through His disciple, which brings good to the recipient. In the same passage mentioned above, Yeshua compares the act of receiving His disciples as similar to receiving a prophet or a righteous man, noting that when the recipient genuinely does so, they are blessed with a reward from God (cf. 1 Kings 17:8-16). When someone opens their home, attends their ear, and receives the good words (or work) that God is communicating through a disciple, they are blessed by God Himself.

“And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward” (Matthew 10:42).

What does this mean for us? It means that whoever is on the receiving end of God’s work through us can expect to have God truly affect their lives for their betterment. It means that when a person chooses to open themselves up to the work of God that they can expect God’s work to run its course and impact them in exactly the way God promises it will.

How does God promise His work will affect them? The best example is that of salvation. Just prior to this passage, Yeshua talks about those who lose their life for His sake will find it, that is, receive eternal life (Matthew 10:39). God promises salvation to those that believe in Him, to those that receive Him and put their faith in Him, and this is the greatest change God can have on anyone. When someone receives the message of salvation through a disciple of Yeshua and believes it, this is their gracious, totally undeserved and unearned reward.

God wants us to affect the lives of others as His disciples and is eager to reward those who receive us. Yet, if we are unwilling, excusing, or disregarding of this commission He has given us, then we are robbing others of the opportunity to be blessed by Him. What excuses are you making that are hindering the good work God has prepared for you to affect the lives of others? People are desperate for God’s intervention in their lives and God needs disciples like you to go out and be His voice and His hands.

Matthew 10:40-42
