A parable is given by Yeshua regarding the time of His return:
“Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near; so, you too, when you see all these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door”
(Matthew 24:32-33).
The signs of His coming again will follow just before His return. There is an immediacy to what the disciples of Yeshua will see before it comes to pass. Just as the leaves of the fig tree come out of their branches upon the arrival of summer time, so will the signs of Yeshua’s return come just before the time of His return.
Yeshua then continues His discourse, saying that this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. This can be understood in two ways: literally “this generation” meaning the people alive at the time of His speaking but also the same word in the Greek “γενεὰ” can also mean “race.” And both meanings are accurate.
The people of Yeshua’s time would come to see the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. by the Romans, but we also know that this is speaking of a future event, because this discourse is a response to the question from the disciples as to what would be the signs of His return. Since Yeshua has not returned yet, this prophecy has been only partially fulfilled during the time of that generation and will come to a complete fulfillment at a later time because all the criteria have to be met and He has to return. Indeed, Yeshua states that His words will not pass away even though heaven and earth will pass away. All will come to fulfillment at the very end of this world.
"...the signs of Yeshua’s return come just before the time of His return."
No one knows when this time be be precisely, but they will have signs to understand when it is near (Matthew 24:36). The next sign Yeshua gives is that the end of days, when He returns, will be like the days of Noah. Men will be pursuing their own desires, ignorant to the coming of great destruction upon them, and then it will come upon them suddenly just as the great flood came about. After the ark was completed, God spoke to Noah:
“For after seven more days, I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights; and I will blot out from the face of the land every living thing that I have made… It came about after the seven days, that the water of the flood came upon the earth”(Genesis 7:4, 10).
Noah warned the people for years about the coming flood, to which no one repented and heeded his message. When the ark was completed, only seven days were given until the flood came. After many years of warning, within a week of completing the construction did the flood come. So now as we wait for the return of Yeshua for many years after His ascension, when the signs have been completed will He come very quickly thereafter, without delay. And when He comes, there will be judgment and destruction against those who have not repented to Him:
Then there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left”
(Matthew 24:40-41).
The one will be taken, gathered for destruction, while the other will be left alone and spared from His wrath (Matthew 13:30).
There are signs to be seen before His return and then very quickly afterward, He will appear. Recognize those signs so that your endurance does not grow faint during trials and tribulations. Like the fig leaf that sprouts when the summer time comes, so too will you be able to recognize when the time is near – if you remember what He has spoken.
Take these words of prophesy to heart and memorize them so that you are not ignorant to the time when it comes. The day grows ever more near. We can be assured through His words to endure until the very end.
